What Are the Different Eyelid Surgery Procedures Offered for Asian Eyes?

Dr. Sung brings decades of experience performing the following types of eyelid surgeries below for New Yorkers of Asian descent:
  • Double eyelid surgery (upper-blepharoplasty) - The most commonly performed eyelid procedure for Asian individuals. Dr. Sung makes a thin incision to remove unnecessary tissue, enhancing the upper eyelid crease to create the appearance of brighter eyes while maintaining an overall natural appearance. It can also help improve the field of vision.
  • Epicanthoplasty - The procedure focuses on the corners of your eyes. Dr. Sung strategically reduces the amount of surrounding skin to make the ends more defined. Epicanthoplasty often accompanies double eyelid surgery.
  • Ptosis - A condition where the upper eyelid droops over the eye—can affect individuals of all ages and ethnicities, including East Asians. Corrective surgery can enhance your appearance and address ptosis-related vision impairment.
  • Revision eyelid surgery - If you’re dissatisfied with past eyelid surgeries, there’s good news—it is possible to address common problems or concerns. Dr. Sung specialized in helping Asian patients who have come to him with issues such as non-incisional eyelid surgery failures, loss of folds, and excessive rounding of the eye shape. He will examine the eyelids and advise on the best course of action.
Dr. Sung can craft an individualized treatment plan using one or more techniques to best meet the patient’s needs. We welcome you to visit us in our Manhattan office to discuss your specific goals for your Asian eye surgery.

How is Asian Eyelid Surgery Performed?

Asian eyelid surgery usually takes about 45 minutes to two hours to complete. This procedure is typically performed as an outpatient surgery using local anesthesia. In some cases, anxious patients can opt for intravenous sedation.to ease their concerns about undergoing the procedure.

What Can I Expect During My Asian Eyelid Surgery Recovery?

After Asian eyelid surgery, patients may be advised to apply lubricating drops or ointment and use cold compresses to aid healing. Most patients return to work in a few days to a week but should avoid exercise and strenuous activities for at least two weeks. Stitches are usually removed after five to seven days. Most swelling and other side effects typically subside within two weeks, at which point patients can resume wearing contact lenses and makeup. It is recommended to decrease your screen time and wear dark sunglasses when outside for two weeks.

What Results Can I Expect After My Asian Eyelid Surgery?

The surgery focuses on creating the ideal eye shape, determining the appropriate fold height, and correcting any associated ptosis.

Although there may be swelling and bruising around the eyes after surgery, these side effects will subside on their own, and the eyelids will improve in appearance for up to a year. The scars from Blepharoplasty and other Asian-eye procedures are well-concealed and usually fade with time until they are virtually undetectable. Although the eyelids are still subject to aging, Asian eyelid surgery produces beautifully natural and long-lasting results.

Additional FAQ About Blepharoplasty and Eyelid Surgery for Asian Eyes

What makes Asian eyelid surgery different from other eyelid surgical procedures?

keyboard_arrow_down

The techniques used in Asian blepharoplasty address the unique anatomy of Asian eyes and the specific results that best complement the facial features.

Asian eyelids typically have more fat in the upper and lower eyelid pads, thicker skin, and a less-defined eyelid crease. Furthermore, Asian skin is collagen-rich, which must be handled gently and meticulously to avoid significant scarring. This, paired with the overall variance in shape, means that the surgeon should have experience performing eyelid procedures specifically for Asian patients. They should also possess a deep understanding of how to make modifications that elevate your ethnically-rooted beauty. The goal is to enhance your Asian eyes, not to westernize their appearance.

What should I do to prepare for eyelid surgery?

keyboard_arrow_down

Dr. Sung will give each patient a detailed preoperative plan of action so you can be fully prepared for the Asian eyelid surgery. This will include simple but effective ways to moisturize and protect your skin from UV rays and other stressors. You should also avoid taking certain medications and supplements in preparation for your eyelid surgery.

In the weeks leading up to surgery, it's recommended that you avoid smoking, stop taking supplements that might increase the risks of bleeding, maintain a healthy, consistent diet, and take precautions to prevent illness. These steps can help support a smoother recovery.

Give yourself peace of mind by creating a postoperative plan focused on relaxation and recovery. Arrange for a trusted friend or family member to pick you up from our Manhattan location and stay with you for the evening and the following day. Be sure to schedule time off work for at least three days. Purchase fresh washcloths in advance, eye drops, and large sunglasses to shield your eyes from excess sun.

Will Dr. Sung be the physician performing my eyelid surgery?

Dr. Sung will be with you every step of the journey, from your initial consultation to the Asian blepharoplasty procedure. He will not substitute another surgeon; he will perform the eyelid surgery himself. This is important not only for your comfort but also for the results themselves—having spoken with you about your hopes and concerns, he can ensure that the procedure reflects your precise vision.

Can I wear contact lenses after my eyelid surgery?
