Facial aging, particularly near the eyes, can give a person a permanently sad or upset appearance. A brow lift, also known as a forehead lift, is a surgical procedure designed to minimize wrinkles and sagging in the forehead area. A brow lift also repositions the eyebrows so that the eyes appear more vivacious and inviting. Fortunately, Dr. Jimmy C. Sung offers several options for both surgical and nonsurgical facial rejuvenation, including brow lift surgery to reverse the aging process without compromising a patient’s natural characteristics.

Brow lift surgery usually lasts about two to three hours and takes place at an out-patient procedure. Either general anesthesia or intravenous sedation can be used. Tissue and underlying musculature are repositioned through carefully placed incisions at or near the hairline, and excess skin is excised as necessary. The incisions are closed with sutures, and a drain may be inserted to collect excess blood and fluid. After the procedure, the patient is moved to a recovery area for observation and able to return home on the same day.
The technique used depends on the overall appearance of eyebrows and eyelids as well as the position of the eyebrows. Dr. Sung offers three different brow lift techniques.
The traditional, or coronal, brow lift requires one long incision that runs behind the hairline across the top of the forehead and down to the ears. This approach gives the surgeon direct visualization of the brow musculature, which is adjusted and lifted according to each patient’s needs.
A hairline brow lift involves a single incision along the top of the forehead that follows the hairline. This technique is suitable for patients with high foreheads who are currently or plan to wear their hair forward to disguise any resulting visible scars.
The endoscopic lift is a minimally invasive technique that reduces the trauma by using an endoscope and a HD monitor. The endoscopic lift requires three to five small incisions meticulously placed across the forehead at the hairline. These shorter incisions mean a quicker recovery and less scarring than those from a traditional brow lift.
Patients typically return home the same day of their brow lift surgery. Swelling may be more pronounced during the first few days of recovery, but most of the swelling dissipates within two weeks. To prevent postoperative bleeding, patients should avoid bending and heavy lifting for a few days. Patients can go back to work within 10 to 14 days of recovery.
Patients can expect to notice the results of their brow lift surgery immediately following the procedure. The eyes will appear more open, and creases around the forehead area will be much less prominent. It can take up to six months for all residual swelling to subside and for scars to fade. The difference can be subtle or dramatic, depending on the individual goals of the patient.
Complications associated with brow lift surgery are uncommon, especially when performed by an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon. However, the risks of any surgery can include the following:
